In an era where social media plays a significant role in the lives of young people, safety concerns have taken center stage. Snapchat, a popular platform among teenagers and young adults, has recently announced a series of new features and policies aimed at enhancing the safety of its 13 to 17-year-old users.

A Growing Concern: The Dirty Dozen List

Snapchat’s commitment to improving safety measures comes as a response to concerns raised by various stakeholders, including lawmakers, educators, and parents. One notable critique is its recurring appearance on the National Center for Sexual Exploitation’s “Dirty Dozen” list. This list highlights entities that facilitate, enable, or profit from sexual abuse and exploitation.

In response to these concerns, Snapchat has pledged to address the issues raised by conducting comprehensive reviews, implementing consequences for problematic content providers, and examining editorial guidelines (CNN).

New Safety Features for Teen Users

Snapchat’s recent announcement outlines several key safety enhancements for its teen users:

  1. Mutual Friend Requirements: To discourage teens from adding unknown users, Snapchat will now require 13 to 17-year-olds to have a higher number of mutual friends with an account before it appears in search results or friend suggestions.
  2. Strike System for Inappropriate Content: Snapchat will introduce a strike system for accounts that promote age-inappropriate content in its Stories and Spotlight sections. If an account posts such content and receives strikes, it may face suspension after accumulating too many strikes within a defined period.
  3. Educational Content: The platform will proactively provide educational content to teen users about online risks like catfishing and financial sextortion.

These new safety features align with Snapchat’s commitment to creating a secure online environment for young users. They build on the existing measures, such as the Family Center and default privacy settings for teens.

The Ongoing Challenge

While Snapchat’s efforts to enhance safety are commendable, the challenge of maintaining a safe digital space for teens persists. Striking a balance between user freedom and protection is a complex task, and platforms like Snapchat continue to adapt to evolving concerns.

In conclusion, Snapchat’s commitment to improving safety features is a step in the right direction, but it also highlights the broader challenges faced by social media platforms in safeguarding young users. As online spaces continue to evolve, the conversation surrounding digital safety and responsibility remains ongoing.

Hello!

I am Rachel Boltz
Your Digital Marketing Expert.

I know that you want to have a successful business. One that is based on the relationships built with your customers that will last for many years to come. Well, in order to do that, you need to build an emotional connection with your followers, maintain a loyal customer base, address customer feedback, manage your digital reputation all along with running your business efficiently and effectively. I know just the way to help you with all your digital marketing needs and that is why I created BOLTZ MEDIA.

You see, the problem is that while being busy running the back end of your business, not only you, but also your clients/customers, can start to feel disconnected with mainstream media regarding your specialty. This can quickly spiral into an overwhelming, out of balance undertaking of multi-tasking and one that is not easy for businesses to do all on their own. Most that do so without outsourcing find themselves falling behind quickly and take upon a position of becoming less relevant. This is especially true if you can not maintain a consistent digital presence. Boltz Media believes that every great business should have valuable and memorable content. I understand that making meaningful off-the-cuff relationships in business can be difficult at times. This is exactly why my team created a system and process that will help any business generate content that connects with their customers.
